Idec: A Workforce Moves In
Biogen Idec (Nasdaq:BIIB), a global leader in life sciences technology
creating new standards of care in oncology and immunology, is working
diligently to complete construction on 1.3 million square-feet of
office, manufacturing and industrial space at Ocean Ranch Corporate
Centre. Dubbed NIMO, or New Idec Manufacturing Operations, the new
90-acre endeavor is set for completion in 2005 and will be the 6th
largest of its kind in the world.
The largest tenant at Ocean Ranch to date, Biogen Idec chose to situate
its 14-building campus at the business park amidst several attractive
offers from other locations. The company attributes that choice to
the site’s direct access to the I-5 Freeway as well as its close
proximity to the company’s headquarters in San Diego. In addition,
the company touts Ocean Ranch Corporate Centre’s central location
in a pro-business community as a significant benefit for any future
development. "Ocean Ranch Corporate Centre is a state-of-the-art
industrial park located in the heart of Oceanside with easy access
to freeways and close proximity to our headquarters," said Johannes
Roebers, senior director of facilities and manufacturing engineering,
Biogen Idec."
In a coup to the region’s economic development, the company
originally purchased 60 acres of land for the endeavor, and subsequently
purchased an additional 30 acres. The site is expected to generate
800 well-paying manufacturing jobs in the City of Oceanside.
As a global leader in the development, manufacturing and commercialization
of novel therapies, Biogen Idec transforms scientific discoveries
into advances in human healthcare. Company milestones include the
discovery development, and commercialization of the first monoclonal
antibody product (Rituxan(r)) and the first radioimmunotherapy product
(Zevalin(r)) approved in the United States to treat cancer. The company
is also developing biologics to treat autoimmune diseases.
The company also manufactures Avonex, the world’s best-selling
treatment for multiple sclerosis, and Amevive, a protein indicated
for the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis currently undergoing
a number of clinical trials.
